People were born in social classes, and could not choose what class they belonged to. There were 4 classes: Brahmins (priests and kings), Kshatriyas (warriors and arishyas- rulers), Vaisyas (cultivators, artisans and merchants), Sudras (peasants and serfs). There was also trading, trading was a really big thing in Indus Valley. There hierarchy was a triangle, Brahmins was first, Kshatriyas was second, Vaisyas was third, Sudras was fourth. Men and women had different roles. It was the women’s job to grind flour, weave cloth and look after animals. The most of the population in the Indus Valley would have been farmers working on the land. The Indus Valley Civilizations had many metalworkers, bead makers, potters, masons and textile manufacturers. These jobs were usually done by men. It is also the men's job to hunt and find food for the family.
